Career Mentor Program

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the Career Mentor Program?

Our Career Mentoring Program connects students with experienced business professionals (alumni or external industry mentors) to provide individualized career guidance that supports their career development. Please refer to the Mentoring Handbook for more details.

The mentoring program also includes alumni-related career skills sessions each semester. Students can have their questions answered and obtain advice from multiple potential mentors during the panel discussion and speed mentoring sessions, and learn job hunting tips and experience from alumni.

Why mentoring?

It is not always obvious to new graduate students how to research career directions. Not only that, there may be many different routes you could take which might make you confused. On the other hand, mentors have been in the same or a similar situation before, they can share their personal experience to offer you insights and advice that can help you clarify your goals, expand your areas of interest, and build professional contacts.

Who can receive a mentor?

The MFAc Career Mentoring Program is open to every current and graduated MFAc student and alumni.

How does mentoring work?

Mentors and students can conduct one-on-one mentoring sessions through in-person meeting, phone chat, Skype, or email. The timeline and interaction style of the mentoring sessions are flexible and depend on the mentor and mentee. Here is a detailed flow chart to help students participate in the MIAB mentorship program.

These events will provide great opportunities for students to ask questions related to obtaining future employment. Now MIAB is trying to collect questions from you which we will ask our presenters and mentors. Please fill out this short survey to help us. If you have any questions, please contact miabment@yorku.ca.

Here are descriptions of previous career skills sessions held in the Winter and Summer 2022 semesters:

The Alumni Board provides valuable engagement opportunities for MFAc alumni to collaborate with the MFAc internship Advisory Board (MIAB), MFAc students and MFAc faculty to connect with each other and students through a wide range of initiatives including supporting MFAc program related to networking, mentorship, professional development, recognition and community engagement.

In collaboration with MIAB, an event was held on May 25, 2022, with a guest speaker, our alumni shared their working experience and networking tips. Most importantly, they gave MFAc students an insight about how to develop our careers in the very beginning of our career path. In the end, Alumni answered questions from our students ranging from the content of our curriculum to necessary skillsets we should develop before applying for jobs.

MIAB's Alumni Liason and Mentoring Working Group also arranged the following events recently:

  • CS106, our alumni Zahid Islam shared very practical and concise tips on how to prepare a resume and interview behavior. Mr. Islam, an MFAc graduate, was very enthusiastic to share his experience and job search tips with the students, answering their questions and providing guidance on their career paths. Mr. Islam shared his own stories and experiences to encourage and motivate students on their job search paths.
  • CS86 provided a great opportunity for students to communicate with our mentors to clarify career goals. MIAB collected 8 questions from students before the session. In the panel discussion session, different answers were sought from our two alumni, Zahid Islam and Tina Wang. Students also participated in speed mentoring and communicated with potential mentors to ask personal development questions. This meeting can be the first step in a mentoring program.
  • CS87, our alumni Sean, Ray, and Professor Tony discussed how to analyze employment advertisements and interview preparation. Our alumni shared his tips on how to organize resumes and behave in interviews and their graduation experience. These three presenters' personal stories resonated with students in the MFAc program and shed light on their future job hunting and career growth.
  • CS76, Mike Mokhtar discussed how to analyze employment advertisements and interview preparation. Zahid Islam shared his tips on how to organize resumes and behave in interviews. Babatunde Olorunfemi took the audience through his post-MFAc graduation experience. These three alumni's personal stories resonated with students in the MFAc program and shed light on their future job hunting and career growth.
  • CS71 provided a great opportunity for students to communicate with our mentors to clarify career goals. MIAB collected fifteen questions from students before the session. In the panel discussion session, different answers were sought from alumni who have relevant work experience. Students also participated in speed mentoring and communicated with potential mentors to ask personal development questions. This meeting can be the first step in a mentoring program.
