Communications Skills Support Programs

As one of the universities which has the greatest number of international students in Canada, York University is offering many free resources for international students to improve their work-related skills. We would like to highly recommend student who has the need to improve these skills to take advantage of these resources. You can see the video made by our coordinators who attended a career skills section devoted to this topic. Here we would like to introduce several programs:  

Career Centre:

York University's Career Centre provides professional career supports to students and recent graduates (up to two years after graduation) to build career self-management skills. This is achieved through providing online webinars, workshops, individual appointments, events, and engaging students with employers, alumni and community partners.

Writing Centre:  

The Writing Centre in York University  could help you to enhance your ability to produce effective academic and professional writing in English. They currently have a set of programs including One on One Writing Support, Online Writing Support, Drop-in Support, Writing Workshop and Multilingual Writing studio for students to get involved. As a York student,  you only need to register for programs through the Writing Centre’s website and then bring along your paperwork and assignment(s) to the session of the program you are registered in.

ESL Open Learning Centre:  

ESL Open Learning Centre provides English language support to enrolled students at York University. This support aims to cover the four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing), as well as assistance in students’ ongoing academic assignments. ESL Open Learning Centre currently offers services such as one on one tutorial session, small group services (assignment help, presentation help and grammar help), theme classes (pronunciation, academic listening, academic reading, ESL Café) to student. Students can register an account online and make appointment for any of services and courses.

Exam Preparation:

The Exam Preparation website page in Learning Skills Services (LSS) helps students to manage course materials and to better understand exams. LSS also provides guidelines and tips to students for preparingfor exams, including before, during, and after the exam for various types of exams. In addition, as we are currently using a virtual classroom format, LSS provides techniques for our students to better overcome online exam challenges.

Sparks:  

Sparks is a module to help students understanding of assignments, providing strategies for effective time management and selecting assignment sources when starting a project. Sparks can help at any point in the preparation of your paper and every aspect of your project when it is in progress.

Learning Commons: 

Learning commons is a service desk located on the 2nd  floor of Scott Library. Together in the Learning Commons, learning services (such as library research support, writing instruction, learning skills and careers services) collaborate to offer students enriched support and learning resources. The Learning Commons offers support for students in the form of appointments, drop-in consultations, online modules and workshops.

Learning Skills Service:  

Learning Skills Services include Workshops,  Peer Academic Coaching, Drop-In, and (on a limited basis)  individual sessions with a Learning Skills Specialist. Open to all current  YorkU  students, undergraduate and graduate, LSS is here to help you take charge of your own learning, build your academic skills and confidence, and foster deeper engagement with your studies.
